BASKETBALL BASICS TO REMEMBER
In-bounds after basket (if pressured) ---
RUN to the ball --- QUICK pass in
Run the baseline to confuse defenders
Player step over baseline for (out of bounds) pass, then pass back in-bounds --
remember: 5 seconds
Any in-bounds pass ---
AS SOON AS SOMEONE IS OPEN, PASS THE BALL
Pass to an open ball-handler, not a specific person; don't wait while the
defense sets up!
Watch your passes, especially out front - ZIP THEM!!
Cut by close for a hand-off rather than a pass (as appropriate); rub off man-to-man defender on screener and drive to the basket for lay-in -- or pass-off if double-teamed
DON'T make the "last" dribble. It puts you under the backboard where you can't make the shot. If close to the backboard on a pass or rebound, don't dribble at all! Use a quick pivot (if back to the basket) and put the ball in. If on a rebound or lob pass, don't bring the ball down before you shoot. Do everything smoothly and in rhythm; lay-in, not bounce-in
Pivot to drive to the basket if direct path is not available; turn to side away from guard's pressure
Keep the floor balanced on offense (overload by design) -- and on zone defense!!
"Give and go": PASS AND CUT to the basket for a pass-back and lay-in or interior pass-off -- remember bounce passes
SET PICKS - outside and inside
PICK AND ROLL to the basket for a pass for a lay-in
BACK DOOR CUT for an easy lay-in (pass from high post)
BOX OUT!!!!
BE AGGRESSIVE - UNDER CONTROL
